Exactly what I was looking for ★★★★★

A no-frills MIDI player, nothing more, nothing less, at a negligible price. Now I can play my old MIDI files on the brand new iMac under macOS Big Sur, both internally and externally (Roland SC-880 and SC-8820 via the ancient MIDI interface Midisport 2×2 [after a driver update]).

Very useful for previewing all my midi file loops ★★★★

I was looking for an app to quickly preview all my midi file loops, and this one is almost perfect. It picks up that drums are drums, so I can hear similar to what I’m going to use them for. I say almost perfrect because it doesn’t loop drum loops correctly, missing part of a beat at the end. But it’s not the end of the world, as at least it gives me the idea of which loops I need to use.

Huge time-saver ★★★★★

I have a 32-year-old Roland U-20 keyboard, and after I had the internal battery changed, the keyboard lost all of its default patch data (the display showed nonsense characters, and wouldn’t play any internal instruments). The Roland company sent me a .MID file and instructions on how to set the U-20 to receive the default patches. I simply added a Roland U-20 device to MIDI Studio on the Mac, and connected the MIDI In and Out ports to an internal Mac MIDI device. MIDIPlayer X was extremely simple to use: I turned off Auto-Play and sent the data to the U-20. Problem solved, without spending weeks trying to figure out one of those complicated software sequencers.
